On April 12, 2011 Beaufort County Crime Stoppers is having our 15th Annual Golf Tournament at Cypress Landing Golf Course in Chocowinity. The golf tournament is Crime Stoppers’ major fund raiser for the year and we are reaching out to the community and community leaders to help us in our effort to assist our local law enforcement officers from the following police departments, Aurora, Belhaven, Chocowinity, Washington and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Beaufort County Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization lead by civilians against crime. Crime Stoppers is based on the principal that someone other than the criminal has information that can solve a crime. We attempt to combat three major problems faced by law enforcement in generating that information: fear of reprisal, apathy, and the reluctance to get involved. We do this by offering anonymity and rewards when information provided leads to an arrest. This past year in Beaufort County, information provided through Crime Stoppers has lead to numerous arrests. The violations included drugs, weapons, bomb threats, and homicides. Most recently, tips received through Crime Stoppers and Campus Crime Stoppers led to the arrest of three individuals for a homicide in Bath.
Over the past year we have become proactive in reaching out to community groups to see how we might be able to increase our effectiveness and better meet the needs of the community. Our members have been in contact with the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce, Washington Housing Authority, Beaufort County Schools, Washington Harbor Alliance District, The Human Relations Council and many individual church groups. Our goal is to assist whenever and wherever possible to insure that Beaufort County is a safer place to live, work and visit. We are working very closely with these groups and we are in the process of putting up Crime Stoppers signs throughout the county. Most importantly, we are reaching out to our schools through Campus Crime Stoppers and assisting our School Resource Officers to provide them with educational material in order to foster a trusting relationship between law enforcement officers and young children.
In order to continue our efforts we must reach out to the community for support, our main source of income. That brings us back to the Golf Tournament. There are many ways to assist us: come as a foursome, sponsor a hole or a tee, cash contribution, donate a prize, purchase raffle tickets, or buy a ticket for our delicious dinner.
